There seem to be several new opinions circulating  regarding the water/flooding issues in Checkley Lane.

CHEC came and did some investigatory work last week and a blockage has been found in the drain on the Staffordshire side, near the bridge.  It is now up to Staffordshire to take action to remove the blockage in order to alleviating the flooding issue under the bridge.

The gullies under the bridge, the responsibility of CHEC, also need to be unblocked.

HS2 is also being brought into the equation by some.   The work on the ponds opposite to Randilow Farmhouse is being implicated in those opinions.  One being that the ponds have been lined and thus overflow causing one of the streams of water from the field onto the road which is then feeding into the flood under the bridge.

The Contractors who did the work have been contacted re the work that they did with evidence to prove or disprove this view.  They have stated categorically with maps the following:

*******

'Once the ponds were excavated the liner was delivered to site in anticipation of installation.  Whilst obtaining suitable growing media to cover the liner and form the ponds the HS2 decision to stop works came and we were instructed to backfill the pond anchor trenches without installing any liner. The liner was then removed from site and taken to the compound at Swynnerton.

There was some dewatering carried out during excavation, which is probably what is being referred to.

The ponds sit in the low point of the ‘bowl’ on site, so any excess water above this level will be retained within the contours of the wider surrounding area (unchanged by the EEW works).

 See below:

The drain has been cleared which appeared to have been causing the build up of water at the telecom mast, also a grip has been dug to draw water that might build up from the road from taking it onto the land.  Thanks to Petr Hatton for his cooperation in this matter and for doing the work.  This has been a great improvement. Unfortunately the water damage to the tarmac on the lane and to the grass verges has been extensive.  The water around the telecom mast remains.  Provided the gulley at this point is kept clear and able to take any surplus run-off then this should not cause a major issue at this point.

These are two of the flooding issues that needed a resolution, and hopefully have been resolved.  Two to go!

It is really important that Staffordshire  County Council now takes  responsibility and action to carry out the necessary work on the Wrinehill side of the bridge, in order  to prevent further recurrences of flooding in these areas after and during heavy rain. - not to mention damaged vehicles and frayed     tempers.

Hopefully the forthcoming general election will provide a suitable motivation to do so!
