Walking in the Rain

On Wednesday I took a walk.  Since rain threatened I also took an umbrella.

Approaching the bridge on Checkley Lane, predictably it began to rain.  I sheltered under the bridge for a while watching how one of the grids, already full of sand and debris, within a very short time, began to overflow.  Within minutes it was lapping across the Lane to where I stood.  Vehicles passed and since no-one offered me a lift and the puddle had now formed across the road I decided to walk on - in the rain - under my umbrella.

By now the rain was bouncing off the road and its direction of flow was clear.  Theories of how the flood along Checkley Lane was formed did not match up with the actual flow of water I was now witnessing.  This came down the hill on the East Cheshire side and under the bridge.  The water should have disappeared into the two grids.  They were full so the water backed up under the bridge and proceeded to find its level further along the lane on the Staffordshire side.  From here it followed the camber of the road and crossed over to the telecom mast and flowed into the new drain here. Since the drainage channel for the mast to the drain has now been covered over with soil, this drain could become blocked if it is not regularly cleared.  The  water coming down from the new road on the right hand side, flowed around the bend to end up in another blocked drain.  As this is a low point in Checkley Lane, having nowhere else to go, the water  fanned out across the road.  Within a matter of minutes the puddle across Checkley Lane was back again.  Only the day before I had marvelled how the water had almost dried up and the kerbing was visible once more, but not for long.

What a difference a five minute downpour makes.
