Noticeboard

I also saw the vandalised noticeboard in the bus shelter outside the village hall.   The notice board was not particularly substantial and was more like a kitchen noticeboard - a cork board within a wooden frame - rather than something fit for purpose.  Nevertheless, damaging it was not a particularly good idea since the notices posted on it provided some light reading whilst waiting for the No 85 bus to arrive.  Beside it was a dead blackbird.  Are we still in a bird flu zone and if so do we report the dead bird?

Dead Tree

Image
I was informed to day by a helpful resident that the tree mentioned below was indeed a TPO Tree  (T4 within the TPO 80 Betley Village Hall).  Perhaps the Chair of the Village Hall Committee would contact either the Borough Council or the Staffordshire County Council to see what should be done about it, in terms of death of a TPO tree and a possible breach of the planning permission/conditions granted given the tree was intended to remain.  United Utilities might also be contacted, if they had commissioned the work to be done to widen the road. It would also be useful to know when the road might be completed (ie its surfacing), when the work on the Sewage works enlargement is going to be completed and when the fence is going to be installed.    Odour has been detected from the sewage plant last week from the main road.  Many thanks.  I was informed today that the mature chestnut tree that some people tried so hard to save from felling has since died....

Potholes

IAM Roadsmart which claims to be one of the largest road safety charities and whose objective is that all road users are able to safely and sustainably use the public highways together, has just published a report on the number of potholed roads reported to local authorities, and their repair.  Staffordshire appears to rank 15th out of a total of 214 LAs surveyed with an unenviable record. This report claims that only a small percentage of potholes have been 'fixed' - ie 1 in 5.  Local Councils are thus urging central government to provide more funding for road repairs  as a matter of urgency.   At the moment the research suggests that any repairs amount to a post code lottery rather than being a matter of urgent repair.  To read the Report and study the 'League Table' visit www.fillthathole.org.uk/league-table?sort=desc&order=Total+reports . It is unfortunate that a recent list of road repairs/alterations for the next year or so etc published by ...

The Devil in Betley

When I was surveying footpaths in Bowsey Wood recently, I got into conversation with a fellow walker who told me that he had lived in the area all his life and during the course of the conversation asked if I had heard this saying: Aidley, Maidley, Kalile and Cassle Uxson,Muxson, Ower and Assan Ranshall rugged and Raine Hill rough But Betley's where the Devil went thruff. As explained to me, it seems that the condition of the roads especially through Betley were so rugged and rough it was suggested that the devil had passed through.  Since the improvement of roads via the introduction of Turnpike Trusts and State responsibility for roads (although at times this is questionable), and faster vehicles, other road problems have become an issue - eg speeding. Walking down the Main Road this afternoon, the narrowness of sections of the pavement was noted.  If the boundary edges with fields and properties were to be cleared of overgrowing vegetation then the pavement would be at leas...
